Sketch: Final Dwarf

Just a quick tonal rendering to finish this sketch off. Will focus more on the rendering next time > better lighting > rim light!

Sketches: Crazed Dwarf

Joined a sketch group! This week's topic is a crazy ex-lumberjack dwarf, out for revenge. Some prelim sketches to give myself a feel for the character.

3d model: Dino - Pose Two

He looks a little pissed.

3d model: Dino - Pose One

3d model: Dino Rigging / Skinning

Finished skinning the Allosaurus and started posing it today. I didn't mind the skinning process; I thought it would be a nightmare but weight-painting was surprisingly relaxing! Big ups to Dave & Ian for helping me out with the rig - that would have sucked trying to remember that solo :)

3d model: Allosaur, now in 3 flavours!

Lit the model and have applied 3 different diffuse maps. I like the green, but the white works as well.

3d model: Allo New Colour

I was asked to changed the colour... so viola! Colour changed. Finally got the displacement map working in maya... what a headache that turned out to be. Thankfully Matty was able to give me some life saving tips. Binge has also been a life saver on this little project of mine. Big ups to those boys :)

3d model: Allo render SSS

Spent today getting everything imported into maya and messing with the sub-surface scattering shaders. After a bit of trial and error, it started looking ok :) Now... to rig. :/

3D Model: Allosaurus max render

Low Poly model with normal map, quick render in max. Low poly cage = around 10k Tris.

3D Sculpt: Allosaurus w/ Colour

This is a week or two down the track from the sculpts I posted earlier. I changed the proportions, focussing on musculature and polypainted the mesh in Zbrush. I will bake the normals, cavity map and diffuse texture from this and rig it up in maya. Fun times!

2D Concept Art: The Mayor

Character concept: This guy is the town mayor. The challenge for me was to keep his clothing archaic but give him a regal air. The final product was quite different to how it began. Based on feedback I was given, I exaggerated the proportions and gave him more expression. I drew a few other characters for this, so I will post them also!

Art Dump: 20 Minute Robots

Here are a couple of robot sketches. I gave myself a 20 minute time limit for each and approached each differently.

Art Dump: Older piece

This is an older piece. I illustrated this for one of my best mates, it was a 30th birthday present. I wanted to create something that could either be perceived as foreboding or beautiful.

3D Sculpt: Allosaurus, first pass

This is an early sculpt of my current project - a theropod dinosaur, the Allosaurus. This is the second round of sculpting after retopologising the first sculpt to get a cleaner mesh. As I'm going to be animating it I had to get the mesh as clean as possible. More on this to come.

Art Dump: Dino-dig shirt

I did this drawing for the back of the 2010 Dinosaur Dreaming T-shirts. They thought it would be nice to have it appear as if the dinosaur was climbing up the back of the shirt.

3D Model: Escher inspired

An Escher inspired building I made to get my head around mental ray. About 3 days work. May go back later and give it another lighting pass.

3D Sculpt: Goat

This is a Zbrush sculpt I made late last year. I've been using Zbrush a lot more recently and it's become one of my favorite and most powerful tools. I will post up more sculpts as time goes on.

Art Dump: More cyber-punk

Unfinished, but I kind of like it that way. I like the contrast of colours and the sketchy line-work over the soft brushes. I will explore this style a little more I think.

Art Dump: Tattoo Design

This is a commissioned tattoo I created for a mate of mine. His girlfriend is a writer and the brief was simply that it had to contain a fountain pen. She chose the middle one.

Art Dump: The Angels

This was a quick one. I wanted to draw a character that looked like it belonged in a bizarre fighting game - bayonetta meets street fighter 4.

Art Dump: Dentata Daemon

Drew this a couple of months back for one of the creature challenges. I'll have to do one of those again when my plate clears, having a 1 week deadline was a nice motivator. Everyone who saw this told me his face looked quite vaginal :/ ... and that's how it's name was born.

Art Dump: Space Punk

This is an illustration I finished a few months back. In recent months I found myself in a cycle of sketching a lot but taking none of my sketches through to fruition. This illustration represents one of the first pieces that broke that cycle. ps. Cyber-punks rule.
